Learn MASSIVE X:
5 ways to work with wavetables

Watch these videos to learn more about MASSIVE X's immense music making possibilities.

Learning the ins-and-outs of a newly acquired instrument can be a long process, especially when it’s as deep and powerful as MASSIVE X. Equipped with a highly versatile user interface and enormous routing possibilities, there are countless ways of creating unique and interesting sounds and patches. That’s why we’re collecting all the best hints, tips, and insider info from around the web to get you up and running in no time.

Last time out, we compiled some of music production expert Rishabh Rajan’s top tips for getting to grips with the just-released MASSIVE X. In this second post, we’re taking a deeper dive into the often-overlooked oscillator section. With a sprawling collection of wavetables and a range of modes and sub-modes that go all the way from subtle to screeching, MASSIVE X’s oscillators are capable of a wider range of sound than many entire synths.

It’s a good thing, then, that there are already plenty of videos out there designed to help you get to grips with them. Here’s a selection of our favorites, ranging from video guides to tutorials and secret patching tips from some of the best educators in the business:

Find your way around wavetables

Start by learning the basics of MASSIVE X’s wavetables, the different modes, and the mod-oscillators, with Chris Carter from Point Blank Music School. After initializing the patch and starting with the default wavetable Sin-Tri-Saw-SQ, you’ll already be well on your way to pro-level programming.

Build a better 808

Watch ADSR presenter Jonny Strinati explain everything you need to build a beefed-up 808 bass in MASSIVE X – beginning with the oscillators and moving on to more advanced routing and modulation functions.

Create a seven-oscillator pluck

Thought MASSIVE X limited you to two oscillators? MacPro Video’s Rishabh Rajan sets the record straight, using the Routing function to create a unique pluck from seven oscillators spread over different octaves.

Create rhythmic chords with the Switcher LFO

With MASSIVE X’s enormous modulation possibilities, it’s possible to create interesting rhythmic chords with little more than the oscillator section and a single LFO. Learn how it’s done in this short video from ADSR.

Super saws made super simple

This seven-minute video from producer and educator Demis Hellen takes you through the process of crafting big-sounding bass patches by routing in additional oscillators from MASSIVE X’s insert effect slots. And make sure you stick around for some bonus trance leads towards the end.
