Watch: How to make Shepard tones

Learn how to create the Shepard tone - a cinematic effect that adds
suspense to your score - using FORM.

The Shepard tone is an auditory illusion and effect used in modern cinema to create seamless suspense, and popularised by the recent works of Hans Zimmer, such as in 2017’s ‘Dunkirk’. In this latest video tutorial, Native Instruments shows you how to create and use the Shepard tone effect using FORM.

As detailed in this perfect, explanatory video by Vox, the Shepard Tone creates the impression of a tone that is constantly rising in pitch, yet seemingly never getting any higher or lower. This in turn has been used throughout cinema, in either scores or sound design, to manipulate the perspective of the listener. Using FORM, product expert Reuben Cornell shows how to transform simple samples into huge Shepard tones, and use infinitely rising effects, so that you can add a cinematic edge to your sound.
